I have coily, coarse, afro-textured hair, and the Tangle Teezer has completely changed how I detangle and manage my hair. I’ve tried so many other brushes—like the Wetbrush and the Unbrush—and while they felt gentle, they didn’t actually perform. This brush, however, does everything I need and more.
It’s truly amazing how well the Tangle Teezer grips and detangles my strands without ripping or breaking them. The alternating bristle heights are a game-changer—they help grip the shorter and longer hairs evenly, which is especially important since I have a mix of lengths throughout my hair.
It glides through my hair without needing small sections, so I can work in larger areas and still get a thorough detangle. Unlike other brushes, it distributes product deeply, even reaching the inner layers of my hair. When I use it with oils or serums, I can see the product being spread evenly from root to tip—something the Wetbrush and Unbrush didn’t do well at all.
What really stands out is how it compacts and clumps my curls instead of making them expand. That smooth, compressed finish helps prevent tangling later on, especially important for coarse hair that can easily mat if curls aren’t properly grouped.
I also love:
• It lays flat against my hand while smoothing downward, which matches how I naturally detangle
• It creates enough tension to smooth, but not too much to cause breakage
• It’s easy to clean and can be used in the shower
Through all this, I’ve realized what I’m really looking for in a brush:
• It should smooth, detangle, distribute product, and remove shed hair all at once
• It needs the right balance of tension—not too tight, not too loose
• It should have alternating bristles to grip different hair lengths
• It must help with curl clumping and compression, not cause expansion or frizz
• And it must support quick, efficient detangling in fewer sections
The Tangle Teezer hits all of these marks. For anyone with coily or coarse hair who’s tired of brushes that almost work—this is the one.
I only wish that it had a Handel and was flatter.
